This past weekend our crew had a self-imposed device detoxing weekend. Since March, we have been relying on our devices more than ever and taking a few days to kind of reset ourselves was wonderful. I highly recommend trying it, as you are able, but know that the urge to pick up the phone and do a random scroll session through social media and/or your emails will be strong. That's why I put together this list of some of our favorite device-free activities, and I truly hope you'll share some of your favorite device-free activities in the comments!
1. Read a book (🎶 or maybe two or three🎶)
I was able to get through 2 books over the weekend, for a total of 795 pages read!
2. Pack a lunch and go for a scenic car ride
Drive until your stomach indicates it's time to stop, find a cozy (and open to the public) spot, enjoy a picnic, and some cloud gazing!
3. Stretch your mind with some word games
I love word games- Crossword Puzzles, word searches, and word scrambles are my favorite.
4. Pick up supplies from your local craft store and create something awesome
We made some neat "bubble art" images earlier in the year on canvas squares with acrylic paint and different sized circles (think bottle caps and paper product tubes).
5. Send some letters
Write a letter to someone you know and share how much you appreciate them. You could also brighten the day of a senior citizen, like our friends at A Mother's Cry, and send a letter to someone at a senior citizen facility.
6. Play some board/card games
This is probably my number one favorite thing to do, so why it's 6 on the list, I couldn't tell you. I love playing games with the kids and discovering when they have grown out of us taking it a little easy on them and onto us really struggling to win!
7. Go for a walk/hike and take in the sights
It's hard to come up with anything that beats fresh air and warm sunshine! Although, that smell right before a light rainstorm is pretty rad too.
8. Try a new recipe
If you're like me, you've got a bunch saved, so go on and pick one (or two if you have the time and patience), print/write it out, and try it! We recently tried a "Crescent Roll Cheesecake" recipe we saw shared on social media, and although the cinnamon/sugar topping got a little burnt, it tasted so good!
9. Detox in other areas
This last activity might be a little less enjoyable in the midst of it, but you will definitely enjoy the end results. Go through your closets, drawers, bookshelves, pantries, mail pile (etc.), and get rid of what you don't need. Donate/sell what you can and dispose of the rest.
There are plenty of fun activities you can do during your device detox, these are just a few of our favorites. We want to know- what are some of your favorite #DeviceDetox activities? Leave a comment and let us know. We'd love to add a few more options to our list!
